I spy with my little eye, shutter installations in places beginning with…

C.

Yes, conveniently, the theme of our week has pretty much revolved around everything beginning with ‘C’.  Chislehurst, Clapham and Croydon have been the designated areas for our fittings team, where they’ve been hard at work completing shutter installations of the Cafe- style variety (yup, still in keeping with the ‘C’ theme). We would say the demand for this coveted style is currently ‘off the hook’ but frankly, that wouldn’t describe the quality of their craftsmanship particularly well.  Suffice to say, there are plenty of people in the South East who are no longer feeling like goldfish…

Bromley Blinds Real Home Recent Project

We’ve got an installation in a period property to show off on the blog this week.
The Location | A private home in Bromley, Kent.
The Project | Shutter installations in the lounge and office.
The Brief | The focus of this project was to design an effective light control solution that would be versatile in providing privacy to a bay window in the lounge and dual aspect windows in the home office. The selected designs would remain sympathetic to the period features of the house and not obscure the large window designs.

A home in Bromley before a Bromley Blinds installation of cafe style shutters.

The Solution |  Cafe style plantation shutters crafted in white teak were designed for the lounge and office windows. This style of shutters provides privacy from onlookers without taking the light away. Cafe-style shutters can be particularly beneficial in a period property as they still allow lots of light in, making rooms feel roomier and highlighting wonderful high ceiling features. To provide complete continuity, these shutter designs all featured 63mm louvres with central control rods. The hard wood shutters were colour finished in Butter, to blend with the paintwork throughout the house. Cafe-style shutters were aligned to follow structural breaks in the windows, covering only the bottom sashes. The shutters were made from Grovewood white teak, affording our clients the benefit of a 10 year warranty.

Plantation shutters are the perfect choice for bay windows in your home. If you’re wondering why, read this.

Feeling like a goldfish?

Bromley Blinds Cafe Style Shutters Goldfish Advert

Granted, we all like people watching, but usually that’s when we’re seated in a cafe, coffee in hand. Street facing windows can make you feel super exposed and a bit like everyone is continuously checking you out in your own home. The solution? Purchase some privacy. Get rid of that goldfish feeling by investing in cafe-style plantation shutters.

Sick of feeling like a Goldfish? Invest in Cafe style shutters. Here, design inspiration pinned by Bromley Blinds

The good news? You don’t have to be surrounded by nosy neighbours (or their cats) to warrant such a purchase. Here are 5 other really good reasons to be considering cafe-style shutters:

1. Noisy neighbours.

There’s a lot of action outside your street facing window. Through-traffic, the postman, parked up delivery drivers, kids on scooters…sometimes it just gets too hectic for the ear drums. Shutters are a great sound barrier and really help reduce the street level noise that may be disrupting your day.

2. You need a light control balancing act.

Ever had too much light flooding through your window panes, rendering areas of a room useless at certain times in the day? Sunlight can also ruin your furniture and drastically alter the appearance of a decorating job. Cafe style shutters allow you the best of both worlds. They’re a half way house between gaining total privacy and still benefitting from loads of natural light.

3. They are the most versatile option.

When it comes to dressing your windows, cafe style shutters work brilliantly on their own or combine seamlessly as a combination with curtains and blinds. Their half-height design makes them really inviting too (awarding your home loads of kerb appeal plus points).

4. Save on your bills.

Insulation is key, particularly during the colder months in the UK. Shutters provide extra shielding from the elements and are especially really noticeable as a guard if you’ve got thinner panes of glass. Their installation can noticeably reduce drafts and keep you snug.

5. Increase room layout options.

Cafe style shutters create coverage that can act as a partial virtual ‘wall’ which blocks out distractions and maintains a clean line external view. This means you can use previously redundant window spaces – especially handy if your space is cosy.

Unveiled: the next big thing in the playground

Primary School Playground Awning By Bromley Blinds

The Location | A primary school in Plumstead, South East London.
The Project |  The installation of an awning in the playground.
The Brief | The focus of this project was to enhance this primary school’s outdoor space by creating a new exterior shelter facility in the playground. This would enable pupils to enjoy their break and lunchtimes outdoors and ensure their protection from the elements at all times!
The Solution | To provide ultimate flexibility, we designed and installed a manual cassette awning that is fully retractable when not in use. The awning is operated on the left hand side with a 2.1m crank handle. We designed the frame colour for this awning in Traffic White. The selected fabric used for this bespoke product was Satler fabric in Blue, from the Tortola range. The awning was 3.5m in width with a 14 degree angle tilt and a maximum outward projection of 3m.

Plumstead Primary School Awning Designed and Installed by Bromley Blinds

Three reasons why awnings score top marks in school playgrounds:

1.  Awnings redefine outdoor space in schools by creating protected areas.  Their installation can even create an outdoor classroom, giving students the opportunity to enjoy fair weather and a different perspective as they work.

2. They offer protection from the sun. Awnings offer shade and shielding from harmful UV rays, allowing children to relax under their cooling coverage even in the hottest weather conditions.

3. The unpredictable nature of British weather can mean that a playtime or sporting activity outdoors is disrupted if the weather changes for worse. Under awnings, children can shelter with ease from showers and enjoy their free time outdoors with minimal disruption.

Tempted to increase your outdoor space options at home or work? Our awnings are designed with great functionality and ease of control as key features. They can be manually operated or automatically retractable, with a range of available angle tilts.  If desired, they can also be designed to lie flat across the top of a space to provide even greater sense of room. Whether you’d like a small domestic design or a large bespoke commercial canopy featuring a full electric operating system, Bromley Blinds have the awnings solution for you.

Battling Bertha (plus a home makeover we finished before she hit)

It’s been quite a week since we announced our big news! With orders coming in from Chiswick to Chislehurst, it’s been a hub of activity here at HQ as we design your new light control solutions. Our fitters have been battling Bertha (she’s certainly trying to make sure that Summer in the UK is finally over…) as they’ve completed installations of shutters, blinds and awnings all over the South East.

Bromley Blinds Real Home Recent Project

The Location | A home in Brockley, South East London.
The Project | The installation of light control solutions in a lounge and master bedroom.
The Brief |  The lounge in the house features a large bay window. Upstairs, the master bedroom boasts two windows that provide a dual aspect view from the front of the house. One of these is a matching bay window to the one that is featured in the lounge on the ground floor.  All three windows needed dressing in a way that would modernise the look and feel of the lounge and bedroom, open up the window spaces, and maximise options for privacy. It was important that the new window dressings were able to effectively maintain a calming environment to promote rest and relaxation and enhance the contemporary feel of this refurbished home.

Bromley Blinds A Brockley Home Makeover Before Shot

The Solution | Tier on Tier bi-folding hardwood shutters were designed and installed on the three windows across the two rooms. Plantation shutters were selected as they would create a seamless visual across all the windows, and this light control solution was sure to perfectly fit each unique window space in this beautifully restored older property. To provide complete continuity, these bi-folding shutter designs all featured 63mm louvres with central control rods. In both the lounge and master bedroom we finished the hardwood shutters in pure white to colour match the paintwork. The upper and lower tiers of the shutters were aligned with the split pane design of the sash windows.

Ensuring your selected light control product will totally fit your window space is a really important consideration. It’s especially relevant when you are renovating a property steeped in history; angles and measurements in such buildings can vary enormously from one side of a window to another! It is highly recommended that your chosen light control solution is expertly designed by a trusted professional in order to ensure it meets the original brief.  Have you seen our tips on making sure your home improvements are remembered for all the right reasons? BIG company news – Which? You need to know now!

We’ve been hinting that something’s up over on Twitter for a little while now, but we are finally able to share with you our very exciting company news!  Here at Bromley Blinds HQ we’re absolutely delighted to be able to announce that Bromley Blinds Ltd have just been endorsed by Which? as a Trusted Trader!

which-trusted-trader-download-logo-346612Why we are so proud!

Which? are widely renowned in the UK for championing the highest quality products and customer service. Their intensive testing and reviewing processes on products and services makes them the go-to resource for many consumers nationally. The Which? Trusted Trader endorsement is aligned perfectly to our company ethos; at Bromley Blinds we’ve always made product quality and customer service our utmost priorities. We are delighted to be affiliated with a national service that lets consumers know about the very best traders they can trust.

What happened during the application process?

The application process was very thorough and took place across six stages. It ended with an assessor from Which? visiting our office at Bromley Blinds HQ. During this assessment day, all of our financial details, current staffing, present and future business plans were reviewed. The assessor also conducted client interviews. A sample of ten customers were selected randomly by Which? and then interviewed by the assessor; at this point it was entirely down to the company’s success speaking for itself!

What we liked about this process is that it is totally fair and requires companies to be wholly transparent. The Which? Trusted Trader application is intensive, but totally on the side of the consumer; any business applying can expect to have every aspect of their company investigated really thoroughly. This guarantees that the businesses who are successful with their applications are truly trusted traders; which makes us that bit more thrilled to have received such an endorsement!

What does this mean now?

As well as our own company website, we’ve got a shiny new profile over on the Which? Trusted Trader website! This means that people searching for a reputable company in London, Kent, Sussex and Surrey can immediately find us listed as a recommended business for the design and installation of awnings, canopies, blinds, curtains and shutters. On the footer of our new profile, customers can submit a review too; so if you’ve previously completed an independent Feefo review and would also like to add one our new area of the Which? website, then you’re very welcome to do so!

In other news –  have you received an email newsletter from us recently? If so, you’re now benefiting from huge exclusive online offers available to the clients on our mailing list. If you’ve missed out on recent correspondence and would like to added to our list*, drop us an email at office@bromley-blinds.co.uk – we look forward to keeping in touch!

Coloured plantation shutters: Expectations vs Reality

It’s been a while since our World Cup feature (apologies if you’ve been doing your best to forget the whole debacle that was England’s performance). This week we’re once again talking coloured plantation shutters for your home. Contrary to popular belief, coloured shutters aren’t as radical as you think. Whilst a host of bright colour options can potentially intimidate new customers, this post features a recent (demure and classy) makeover. It goes to show just how effectively colour can be utilised to make a design statement, which – in reality, doesn’t prove too terrifying.

Bromley Blinds Real Home Recent Project

The Location | A private home in BR3.
The Project | The installation of plantation shutters in the lounge, study and bedrooms.
The Brief | The focus of this project was to design an effective light control solution that would be versatile in providing visually consistent coverage to all rooms, whilst accommodating their various window designs. The intention was to produce a range of light control products that were colour finished to make them stand out as really unique installations, yet make their colour neutral enough to blend with differing colour schemes featured throughout the house.

The Solution |  Hardwood shutters were designed and installed on windows. Plantation shutters were selected as they would create a seamless visual across all the windows, and this light control solution could be designed to perfectly fit each unique window space. To provide complete continuity, shutter designs all featured 63mm louvres with central control rods. The hard wood shutters were colour finished in Truffle. Cafe-style shutters were installed in the study, whilst the large bay windows in other rooms were fitted with full height shutters with an inserted mid rail that is aligned to the design of the windowpanes.

Does your room divider pass the test? This one does.

This week’s blog post showcases another real home recent project, featuring a product material currently available to clients (at a hugely discounted price!) via our Summer Offer.

The Location | A private home in East Dulwich, London SE22.
The Project | The installation of a room divider for an arched doorway separating the kitchen and a reception room.
The Brief | The intention of this rather special project was to create a bright, modern room divider for an archway on the ground floor of the property, enabling a definitive separation between the kitchen and reception room, yet providing flexibility with a number of options for the level of coverage selected. The archway is a design feature of the property; therefore it was essential that the product selected would not obliterate its unusual shape or block out natural light. Needless to say, curtains were a total no-no!

Plantation shutters were designed by Bromley Blinds to perfectly fit the archway space. The installed room divider was crafted in hardwood with a silk white finish.
The Solution | Plantation shutters were designed to perfectly fit the archway space. The installed room divider was crafted in hardwood with a silk white finish to blend seamlessly with the paintwork in the property. The shutters feature streamlined 47mm louvres and offset tilt rods which are aligned to make the most of the light ingress accessible through the different sections when they are opened.  A mid-rail features in the design, meaning that the upper tier is separated from the lower and enables a ‘window space’ to create a different look and feel to the room divider when the louvres are opened and those on the lower tier remain shut. The shutters have bi-folding doors, which minimises the space taken up when they are fully opened.

Need a reminder of the wonderful seasonal savings we are currently offering? You order MDF shutters designed by us and then we upgrade you to our beautiful hardwood shutter range. Our summer offer gives you a choice of six product finishes, in different shades of white and cream! Our standard hardwood range plantation shutters are supplied with a 5 year warranty, giving you complete peace of mind for the cost of a significantly cheaper investment.

Why you should be spending time thinking about cafe style shutters

It’s finally arrived. We’re enjoying a scorching summer!

This week’s blog post features a real home project that screams this season. The reason? The product’s design means that a huge amount of sunlight is still naturally accommodated via your windows, whilst maintaining your privacy. This one’s perfect for those balmy summer evenings!

Bromley Blinds Real Home Recent Project

The Location | A home in East Dulwich, London
The Project | The installation of plantation shutters to a reception room
The Brief | The intention of the project was twofold; the new light control design had to be able to provide different options to combat the intensity of light that flooded the southerly facing reception room. With curtains alone, the room was proving difficult to utilise at some points in the day due to brightness severely reducing workable visibility. The design also had to create a contemporary modern look, using a product neutral enough in colour and design to blend with the decor and existing curtains that were to continue to be featured in the room.

Cafe style shutters Installation by Bromley BlindsThe Solution | Cafe style shutters in MDF were designed for the triple aspect sash windows in the reception room. The colour selected for the shutters was Pearl, to match the paintwork of the window frames and the surrounding room decor. 63mm louvres alongside visible central control rod systems provided enhanced detail on each shutter. The cafe style plantation shutters were designed with 3 sided frames to create a snug fit. Plantation shutters were selected as they would create a seamless visual across all the windows, whilst allowing the light ingress for each to be controlled completely independently.

Although the triple aspect windows are separated by small central walls and hanging curtains, these plantation shutters are thoughtfully designed as bi-folding, opening out symmetrically to each side of the two main windows in the room as a whole, thus making the most of their visual effect when fully open. Cafe style shutters Installation by Bromley BlindsCafe style shutters only partially cover your window, usually the bottom half. If your room is in a basement floor or at street level and does not receive much natural light, then cafe style shutters may be the perfect solution for your window. This style of shutters will provide additional privacy from onlookers without taking the light away. They are also great if you want to keep your curtains to dress your window as they will elegantly complement  any fabric. Cafe style shutters can be made to any desired height and this would normally follow a structural break in your window. As shown in these designs for sash windows, cafe style shutters normally only cover the bottom sash.

Have you thought about planning an interiors facelift before the colder seasons stage their annual takeover?

Our Bromley Blinds Team, Your Backstage Pass

This week on the blog it’s all about us. To be honest, it feels a little weird; we’re far more comfortable discussing the latest interior design trends, top tips or showing you the projects we’ve recently been working on. But sometimes it’s good to share some backstage insider information, especially when it enables you to see exactly who you’ll be dealing with when you make that initial contact with Bromley Blinds and who you’ll have pop by your home or office space to design or install your bespoke light control solutions.

Bromley Blinds Staff Team Photo

So now you know who’s who. Here’s the insider scoop:

Andy – Surveyor/MD/Director

Andy’s been a specialist in Light Control Solutions and the Interior Design market for over 20 years. He’s a founding partner of Bromley Blinds and previously ran a huge corporate blinds agency on the South Coast, serving clients in the commercial and domestic sectors. His motivation for starting Bromley Blinds came from a desire to create a company that was large enough to fulfil any order for the largest corporate customers, but small enough to deliver a totally bespoke design and fitting product service for all its private customers. Bromley Blinds has achieved just that; from day one you’re assigned your own personal surveyor. They ensure that every step of your home improvement service is expertly managed in an entirely stress-free manner.

What you need to know about Andy: he’s addicted to Victoria Sponge. So much so that he’s currently trying to find a support group (one that provides cake samples at every session).

Billy – Surveyor

Billy makes sure the design, quotation and installation of your light control products is a totally seamless process from start to finish. He also gets asked (on average) every 17 minutes if he is the gentleman that stars as Juan in the Plenty advert (no, it’s not him – but the likeness is totally uncanny – isn’t it?!)

Juan Plenty Advert

Chris – Fittings & Installation Manager

Chris’s attention to detail is what makes the installation process of your products seamless. If a shutter door is out of alignment by just half a millimetre, Chris can tell you from standing 10 metres away. It’s this same superstar precision that once enabled Chris to install and arrange 97 clothes pegs onto his own face. We’re still pestering him for a picture to share with you.

Nick – Fitter

Nick’s already had a blog post entirely devoted to his skills  (plus a video of him completing an installation), so we’re going to keep it brief. He’s the most recent recruit to Bromley Blinds and in his spare time totally nails Mai Thai. (The martial art, not the cocktail).

Steve – Fitter

Steve’s part of our friendly fitting team here at Bromley Blinds. He’s got lots of experience and this includes his role as resident (superstar) DJ. Recordings of his Deep House and Old Skool Garage mixes provide the ultimate on-board van entertainment when our installations team are travelling in between jobs.

Tom – Business Operations/Administrator/Logistics

Tom was baptised in Bethlehem. Quite simply, he’s been a guiding star of business operations ever since. At Bromley Blinds, Tom is the oil to the finely tuned machinery. He ensures everything happens a) on schedule and b) brilliantly.

Here at Bromley Blinds HQ, we pride ourselves on delivering to you the highest levels of product service and customer care. It takes a great business team to ensure that those things consistently remain our number one priority. Right from day one, back in 2009, we’ve welcomed new additions after really careful consideration. For us, it’s more than finding an employee with the necessary skills and credentials; we only choose team members who fit fully with our ethos and are keen to uphold the really high professional standards that we are totally committed to providing for our clients.

So, future team developments? We’ve actually got a new fitter joining our talented installation team. His name is Adam and he starts next week. We’re going to be tasking him with our trickiest installations and compiling a rigorous interview for him to respond to whilst he’s on the job completing them. We’ll report back on that shortly!

Responsible for a home improvements budget? Here’s a top notch way to spend your money.

London in the sunshine is pretty blissful isn’t it? It’s certainly been the perfect accompaniment to a week crammed with blinds and shutters installations! With Wimbledon in full swing and the launch of our amazing Summer Offer, this week has been a really busy one about town!
